MARCO SPESCHA’S IDENTIKIT, HEAD OF HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT
Name, Surname, Role
Marco Spescha, Head of Health, Safety and Environment
What the profession of manager of the HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) is about?
Throughout my career in photovoltaics I have always worked to ensure the maximum performance of production plants. In this new role I have been able to see the company from another, more human, point of view where employees are at the centre of everything. My role is to create systems and procedural schemes to preserve the health and safety of colleagues, anytime and anywhere, in full compliance with regulations and the environment.
What are the challenges you had to face in this emergency situation?
I became manager of HSE in February, at the height of the emergency, which was a very difficult but also challenging baptism of fire. The main challenges were to devise and activate a protection system for all employees at the various sites, in the plants scattered throughout the country, and to deal with the difficulty of finding means of protection and with the constant changes in national and regional directives. Despite everything, we have implemented an anti-Covid-19 plan that has allowed us to continue to provide clean energy to the country safely and in compliance with regulations. The support of company’s top management, who has been attentive, helpful and responsive from the outset, has been crucial. I am very proud of what we have done.
What course of study did you take?
I graduated in Mechanical Engineering at La Sapienza University of Rome. I have been enrolled in the Order of Engineers of the Province of Rome for over 20 years.
What professional experience was the most impactful to you?
Certainly, the last experience I had before entering the renewable energy sector, at an American multinational company where I worked for thirteen years in European industrial plants. This experience allowed me to learn a lot, to grow as a technician and to mature as a manager and as a man.
Any advice for those who want to take up with the profession?
Step right up. The renewables field is a growing sector and is currently experiencing a crucial phase in its transition to a sustainable and efficient future. In order to achieve the goals of operational excellence and innovation that the markets require, there is a need for capable, prepared and curious young people. We are here, ready to welcome and educate them to give energy to their dreams and to our future.
