Music, like the other arts, has treated the figure of the Sun since ancient times, through sounds and cultures. In the West, the musical notation with which to transmit melodies in written form was developed by Guido d’Arezzo around the year 1000. Below some examples of his works can be found.
The oldest poetic text in Italian literature of which it is known the author is the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi, presumably composed in 1224,. It praises creation including “messor lo frate sole” (“sir brother Sun”). Although the canticle is a poetic, and not musical, composition, in contemporary times many musical adaptations have been made, including that by Angelo Branduardi.
In the era of classical music, among the works directly inspired by the Sun we can remember Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 6 in D major, of 1761, also known as “The Morning” because of the first movement, which recalls the image of dawn. We can also recall, from 1834 the setting to music, by Felix Mendelssohn, of the poem “Sun of the insomniacs!” by the famous Lord Byron.
In contemporary times, in the folk music the Sun appears, figuratively, in the title of the famous “House of the Rising Sun“, a ballad of uncertain origin and composition that was brought to success in a rock version in 1964 by the English band The Animals. Blues and jazz, fundamental genres for the development of rock and pop, have vast repertoires of standards among which there are several titles involving the Sun, such as “East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)”, written by Brooks Bowman in 1936.
In the seven decades of rock and pop, that have dominated contemporary Western culture from the post-war period to the present day, there are many hits by the most important artists dedicated to the theme. The Beatles in 1969, at the height of their career, released the album Abbey Road, in which appeared the delicate ode to the Sun “Here Comes The Sun“, with which the composer skills of George Harrison were universally praised by music critics.
With a leap forward in decades and genres, it ranges from the hit “Walking On Sunshine” by Katrina & the Waves, pop new wave that was the soundtrack to the eighties, to the muffled atmosphere of “Sunrise” by Norah Jones.
