The October Feast of Booths (“Sukkoth”) is approaching. In the Riviera of the Cedars Rabbis, who come mainly from Israel and the United States, work on the Calabrian fields to meticulously select cedars for their celebrations. Five of them are taking turns in the photovoltaic greenhouses, whose plants are owned by EF Solare Italia. The Rabbis agree that cedars of this Region are of the finest quality. Since they have been planted in the third century BC, they have grown better than the cedars that had come from Israel, Morocco and the Corfu Island. They are the smoothest and most scented cedars with the thickest white peel, which is the symbol of human soul. Antonio Lancellotta, the greenhouses’ owner, helps us know more about this thousand-year tradition and how cedars are selected: “during religious feasts the Rabbis hold the cedar in one hand and a branch of myrtle, willow and palm in the other. The cedar is the symbol of the Jew’s heart, therefore they are looking for the one that is as close to perfection as it can be”. Perfection must comply with precise parameters: “the cedar must have three leaves on the same axis, a flower, a pronounced tip, it must be symmetrical, monochromatic and very scented. It must be free from imperfections”.
On 3rd September Rabby Rav Moshe Lazar of the Community in Milan, who was awarded the honorary citizenship of Santa Maria del Cedro, stated as follows: “it is no coincidence that the best cedars come from Calabria: the cedar is very scented and is a symbol of selflessness, like the people is growing there”.
